Animal Charms

Some natives in Sabah, still believe that animal charms have magical powers and bring them good luck.
The house gecko or cicak for example, normally they have only one tail. But if by any chance an individual with a forked tail is found, keep it for it is said to bring fortune to the finder. However, it is important not to break the tail away from the body or it will lose its magical power. A fork-tailed gecko is suppose to bring lots of luck to a gambler.

I found one in  my house. Unfortunately, the tail is not really clear. If u want to have this, go catch it by yourselves! :D

Snake charm is perhaps the most remarkable for it is believed that it can make a person invisible. Find a snake that is moulting, hold it by its tail and wait until the skin is discarded. (The folk said, a while moulting snake is harmless). The immideately tie the abandoned skin around the waist. It is said that the user will be invisible whenever he wishes.
The skin apparently bring luck to gamblers. Gambler are also believed to be interested in a snake that is on the verge of swallowing a frog or a rat.  If he is brave, a man may cut off the snake's head with its victim still half-way inside its mouth.  But the half-swallowed creature must never be pulled out, or the charm will be lost forever. This charm is worn when running long distances.

Charms from the feline family are also believed to be effective.Cats, male or female, do not usually have spotted fur.If they do, they are often black, white and yellow in colour, and always female. However, if a spotted male kitten is found and is the only one born at that time, the owner is said to have all the luck he can hope for !

The magnificent helmeted hornbill is called tuntudun in Kadazan. Although rarely seen outside of primary forest, it can sometime be spotted on desolate graveyards. When it makes its weird tudun-tudan cry, it means that somebody is going to die soon.
The other bird called "Liau" in Bahasa Dusun, also give the same sign when it make its high pitched sound 'Liauuuuuu...Liauuuu........' While i was still in my young age,the sound was appeared to be a roaming ghost for me. I will never ever went out to play for long until the feeling dissapeared by the time.

If one sees a centipede chasing a lizard, catch both and put them in a bamboo container.  Leave them inside the container to die. Later, wrap their skeletons with a piece of black cloth. During the sporting evens, wear it around the waist, arm or any part of the body, wherever is comfortable. Athletes seem to think that he who has it runs like the wind !
Connected with this superstition,I was still remember, during our school sport day event, one of my pupil happened to be a laughing matter by the other of his friends. You know why? It was because he putting a red ant in his armpit. He said, when the red ant making a movement or bitting him, it made him run even more fast..hahaha...not bad! he used to be the first, second or third in trekking event.

Shark tail is sometimes kept in the house for the safety of new-born babies. Long ago, during the childbirth, it is believed that a certain evil spirit known as Balan-balan will visit the mother and suck her blood. To prevent it from coming, hang the tail of a shark on the wall of the mother's room. At the same time, hang several branches of lime tree all around the house. Then make a large fire beside the house.
This also be doing when any of the women in the house were in their menstruation period.
